How to remove viruses yourself โ€“ safely

๐Ÿ“… 10 Sep 2026 ยท โฑ๏ธ 7 min read

Suspect your computer has a virus or malware? The most common signs are:

  • The computer has slowed down significantly
  • The browser opens strange pages on its own
  • Ads appear everywhere โ€“ even on pages that shouldn't have them
  • The computer starts or shuts down by itself
  • You can't open files or programs
  • Strange error messages appear
โš ๏ธ Important: If your computer has banking credentials, passwords, or personal files, and you suspect a serious virus โ€“ do not use the computer online before cleaning. Contact a professional.

Here is a step-by-step guide to removing viruses. Follow the instructions in order.

Step 1: Disconnect from the network

First, disconnect from the network (WiFi or cable). This prevents the virus from sending data out or downloading more malware.

Step 2: Start the computer in Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts only essential programs. Most viruses don't start in this mode, making them easier to remove.

Windows:

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type msconfig and press Enter
  3. Select the "Boot" tab
  4. Check "Safe boot" and select "Minimal"
  5. Restart the computer

macOS:

  1. Shut down the computer
  2. Hold the Shift key while starting up
  3. Release when you see the Apple logo

Step 3: Back up your most important files

Before doing anything else, copy your most important files (photos, documents) to an external drive or USB stick.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Don't copy .exe files or strange files โ€“ they may contain a virus.

Step 4: Run a virus scan

Use the built-in antivirus or download a free tool.

Windows Defender (free, built-in):

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Update & Security โ†’ Windows Security
  2. Select "Virus & threat protection"
  3. Click "Scan options"
  4. Select "Full scan"
  5. Wait until the scan is complete

Malwarebytes (free, very effective):

  1. Download: malwarebytes.com
  2. Install and open
  3. Select "Scan" โ†’ "Threat Scan"
  4. Remove all detected threats

Step 5: Remove suspicious programs

Go through installed programs and remove anything you don't recognize or remember installing.

Windows:

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ Apps & features
  2. Sort by "Install date"
  3. Remove all suspicious programs

Step 6: Clean up browser extensions

Browser extensions are a common source of viruses โ€“ especially "toolbars" and "ad blockers" you didn't install yourself.

  • Chrome: Settings โ†’ Extensions
  • Firefox: Settings โ†’ Extensions and Themes
  • Edge: Settings โ†’ Extensions

Remove anything you don't recognize or need.

Step 7: Update the operating system and programs

Updates fix security vulnerabilities. Install all updates.

Step 8: Change your passwords

If your computer has had a virus, change the most important passwords:

  • Email
  • Online banking
  • Social media
  • Other important services

Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication.

Summary

Virus removal often works on your own, but if your computer is seriously infected or you're unsure what to do โ€“ contact a professional. A botched cleanup can make things worse.
