Why is your computer slowing down? 5 most common causes

Computer slowdown is one of the most common problems customers contact us about. Many think the computer is reaching the end of its life โ€“ but often the slowdown is caused by a few simple issues that can be fixed.

Here are the 5 most common causes of a slowing computer โ€“ and what you can do about them.

1. The hard drive is full

When the hard drive is more than 90% full, the computer slows down significantly. The operating system needs free space for cache and updates.

Solution:

  • Delete unnecessary files (downloads, old photos, videos)
  • Empty the recycle bin
  • Use the Disk Cleanup tool (Windows) or Storage Management (macOS)
  • Move large files to an external drive

2. Too many programs running in the background

When you start the computer, many programs launch automatically in the background. They consume memory and processor time.

Solution:

  • Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
  • Go through the "Startup" tab
  • Disable programs you don't need at startup (e.g. Spotify, Steam, Skype)

3. The hard drive is old and slow (HDD)

A traditional hard drive (HDD) is mechanical โ€“ it spins and reads data physically. Modern SSDs are up to 10 times faster.

Solution: Upgrade from HDD to SSD. This is the single best upgrade you can make. An old computer comes back to life and speeds up significantly.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: An SSD upgrade costs about โ‚ฌ149 + the drive. We do it for you โ€“ and your computer feels like new.

4. Viruses and malware

Viruses, adware, and spyware slow down the computer significantly. They consume resources in the background and can send your data out.

Solution:

  • Run a full virus scan (Windows Defender or another)
  • Remove suspicious programs
  • Install an ad blocker (uBlock Origin)
  • Don't click suspicious links

5. Memory (RAM) runs out

If you open many browser tabs and programs at once, memory runs out. The computer starts "swapping" โ€“ using the hard drive as memory extension โ€“ and slows down significantly.

Solution: Add more memory. 8 GB is enough for basic use, 16 GB for smoother multitasking. A memory upgrade is an affordable update.

Summary โ€“ what to do?

If your computer is slowing down, go through these 5 things:

  1. Clean up the hard drive โ€“ make sure more than 20% is free
  2. Remove unnecessary startup programs
  3. Consider an SSD upgrade
  4. Run a virus scan
  5. Add memory if needed
